Think about what style of music you want to compose. I know this seems like an obvious thing, but it’s easy to
overlook. If you don't where you're going, it's going to be hard to get there.
First of all try to emulate a piece of music that inspires you. It might just be a minute long but keep on
trying and tweaking until you get the sound and the rhythm that you want.
When you get stuck for an idea go back and listen to the piece of music that you want to sound like. You will
start to notice the different sounds and techniques that musicians use to make beats.
Start listening to you favorite artists or the genre of music with new ears. Listen to the different components
of a song and see how they fit together to make a whole “sound.”
Listen to just the kick drum and the bass and you’ll discover how they are the foundation of the song.
Everything else hangs from those two instruments.
Here’s the win/win thing. You enjoy listening to a certain style of music, so you don’t mind hearing it over
and over again. Listen until you can hear each instrument and how it contributes to the song. Ignore the vocal
track for now.
You will enjoy it even more when you discover all the different parts that make the whole. Then you take what
you’ve learned and start to compose your own music, it’s the same genre, but it’s original to you.
When I started writing songs it was very difficult to get the sound I wanted without going into a studio and
paying ($1,000’s) for studio time and using other musicians. Even if I did all that, who was going to listen to
my music? How could I get it distributed?
OK OK! now you know I’m THAT old :)

Now things are much easier. So try this, it’s always easier to be creative if there’s an end result. Get a
downloadable beat making software
like Sonic Producer. It’s
probably the cheapest one out there but it does the job. Then compose, compose and compose!
When you are happy with what you’ve got, load it up to YouTube or any of the other video-sharing sites. You’re
going to need some “visuals” for your music to play along with. You can use photos and string them together,
put up slides of the lyrics. Use your imagination and I know you’ll come up with some good quick and cheap
ideas.
And then...Drum roll please, you’ve published your song to the world.
If you want to get more serious you can place your song or songs to a platform like “CD Baby” they will SELL your songs on their website. They will also place your
songs on all the big Internet music sites like iTunes Amazon for example.
So, just do it! As they say, and you never know, it may be the start of a wonderful journey.
